How to Take Care of a Backpack

There are backpacks like sand on the sea, whether for the short shopping tour through the city, hiking, alpine adventure or travel in foreign countries. Regardless of purpose and size, backpacks have something in common: they are often an inconsiderable burden exposed. For this reason, you should then load these loyal donkeys with a comprehensive care. If you care it correctly, this can reliably prevent premature aging of the material or deterioration of the functionality.

General cleaning

Just after long trips the backpack often looks in, as you would have collected the half forest. In addition, crumbs gather in the individual pockets and compartments. All kinds of dirt settle outside and sweat-inducing activities have often left salt edges on back and carrying system. To make a similarly taken with backpack but again presentable, no heavy guns must be ascended, it is sufficient for a simple trip to the colorful world of the home remedies.

But even before cleaning, you should thoroughly shake out the backpack and remove any crumbs and sand. In winding inside pockets, however, these kinds of dirt are particularly persistent. Here, a vacuum cleaner with crevice nozzle set at low speed will help.

Salt margins, stains and impurities of all kinds can be removed best with warm water and soap or a mild detergent. The bag should never be washed in the washing machine because this can alter its shape and the sustainable material may be weakened. Stronger soiling can be treated well with a medium coarse brush. Prolonged soaking has also proven successful. Also, aggressive detergents have lost nothing. A (bath) tub with warm soapy water is perfectly sufficient. Dirt and grime have loosened; the backpack must be rinsed thoroughly, so that no soap residue on the fabric will remain.

After washing, it is important that the backpack can dry out completely. For this purpose, it is advisable to hang it in a well ventilated place for at least 24 hours.

Zippers, climbing belts

All closures, straps and adjustments are exposed in a backpack of a permanent mechanical load. For this reason, it is important that you do a little makeover to these parts.

Due to pollution of outdoor as well as material abrasion, those zippers still poorly run or even pinch in some places. This problem countered however comparatively easy with standard silicone spray. This can be easily applied on the zipper or the sled. By repeatedly opening and closing the backpack, which then distributes it and ensures that the zipper is smooth again. It should however be noted that not too much is applied. Also it is advisable to clean the zipper with a clean cloth after a short drying time and remove this excess material.

Also in Velcro all kinds of dust and fluff accumulate with time. The pollution is worse, worse ultimately holds the lock. But it can be remedied easily, quickly and effectively. With a small brush (toothbrushes have proved very successful) all particles can be combed again from the Velcro.

Tie-down straps and adjusters are also difficult to move with the times and can literally become stuck after heavy use. Remedy delivers here a longer bathing in lukewarm water. So deep-seated dirt can resolve and the tapes made smooth again.

Backpacks are rarely properly waterproof, for this reason it is advisable in case of bad weather in addition with a rain cover to protect the contents. Despite everything, many backpacks are at least slightly impregnated, to make it impermeable for splashing water and dust. But also this protection progressively decreases due to external influences. With a commercially available spray impregnation the protective layer can be easily restored. But it should be applied only to areas, which are outside of the carrying system, because it may cause individuals with sensitive skin irritation.

The first step to longevity is the proper storage and retention of the backpack. One should never unnecessarily squeeze the backpack or bend. Ideally, the backpack is completely emptied in a dark and well ventilated room. Strong temperature changes as they occur in the car or on an uninsulated attic can damage the material and cause premature aging. A backpack with other equipment is carelessly stacked in a rack or cabinet, it may cause high lateral load of unwanted deformation of the carrying system.

Whether daypack or backpack – to maintain a backpack, it needs no degree in material science. Whoever takes a little time and then the good pieces and moves tackle with a few home remedies has a good chance to take pleasure in his backpack. No abrasive cleaners or other chemicals should be used for this purpose.
